About the government grants

Government grants are publicly funded financial support programs available across the globe. They are designed to assist individuals, households, students, and businesses with essential needs, including education, healthcare, housing, energy, and entrepreneurship, all without the need to repay.

Bursaries are financial support packages designed to help students and learners manage the cost of education. They can cover tuition fees, study materials, travel, and living expenses, making education more accessible without the need for repayment.

Government-backed boiler grants are available to households that need help upgrading or replacing old, inefficient boilers. These grants aim to reduce energy costs, improve heating efficiency, and lower carbon emissions, ensuring warmer homes and long-term savings.

Cavity wall insulation grants provide funding to insulate the gaps between external walls of a property. This helps retain heat, reduce energy waste, cut down on bills, and improve overall comfort—supporting households in becoming more energy efficient.

Grants for health conditions are designed to support vulnerable individuals and families. They focus on improving home safety, accessibility, and comfort for those living with medical needs, helping to enhance quality of life and wellbeing.

Loft insulation grants help homeowners and tenants improve their property’s energy efficiency by reducing heat loss through the roof. With government support, households can cut energy bills, stay warmer in winter, and enjoy a more sustainable home.

Solar panel grants make renewable energy more affordable by funding part or all of the installation costs. They allow households to generate clean electricity, reduce reliance on the grid, lower energy bills, and contribute to a greener future.

Who Can Apply for Government Grants?

Government grants are designed to support people and communities with different needs. While each scheme has its own rules, most eligibility falls into the following areas:

  • Income Support
Some grants are aimed at households or individuals with lower incomes. They help reduce financial pressure by covering part or all of the costs for essential needs like heating, insulation, or education.

  • Home Energy Efficiency
If your home is hard to heat, has poor insulation, or relies on an old boiler, you may be eligible for grants that improve energy efficiency. These upgrades can lower energy bills and make your home more comfortable.

  • Health and Wellbeing
People with certain medical conditions, disabilities, or vulnerabilities may qualify for support. These grants focus on improving home safety, accessibility, and overall wellbeing.

  • Education and Learning
Students and learners can benefit from bursaries or financial support for tuition fees, study materials, and living costs, helping them continue their education without extra burden.

Why Government Grants Exist

Government grants are created to provide support where it’s needed most. They are designed to reduce barriers, improve living standards, and create opportunities for individuals, families, and communities. Some of the main benefits include:

  • Reduce Financial Pressure
Grants help cover essential costs such as heating, insulation, healthcare, or education. This reduces the financial burden on households and allows people to focus on their wellbeing and future.

  • Support Education and Skills
Educational grants and bursaries give students the chance to continue learning without worrying about costs. They provide access to resources, training, and opportunities that build brighter futures.

  • Improve Health and Wellbeing
Some grants are aimed at people with health conditions or vulnerabilities. They make homes safer, more comfortable, and accessible, improving overall quality of life.

  • Promote Greener Living
Energy-related grants encourage households to use renewable energy and improve efficiency. This lowers bills, reduces carbon emissions, and supports a more sustainable environment.

  • Strengthen Communities
By supporting individuals and families, grants also strengthen local communities. They promote fairness, reduce inequality, and create a positive impact for everyone.

What are these schemes?

Government-backed energy efficiency schemes are designed to help households across England and Wales reduce energy bills, improve home comfort, and lower carbon emissions. These programmes provide funding for improvements such as insulation, heating upgrades, and renewable energy systems — often at little or no cost to the homeowner or tenant.

Below are the main schemes currently available:

ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation)

The ECO4 scheme is a government initiative that requires large energy suppliers to fund energy-saving measures in eligible homes.

  • Who it helps: Low-income households, those in fuel poverty, and residents with health conditions affected by the cold.

  • What’s included:

    • Boiler replacements (for inefficient, broken, or non-condensing boilers)

    • First-time central heating systems

    • Home insulation (loft, cavity wall, internal wall, underfloor, etc.)

    • Renewable measures in off-gas homes, such as solar panels and electric storage heaters

  • Benefit: ECO4 focuses on long-term solutions to improve EPC ratings and lower bills.

GBIS (Great British Insulation Scheme)

The GBIS programme, also known as the “Home Insulation Scheme,” provides funding for basic insulation measures.

  • Who it helps:

    • Households in Council Tax bands A–D (England) or A–E (Wales)

    • Low-income or vulnerable households (health or benefits route)

  • What’s included:

    • Loft insulation

    • Cavity wall insulation

    • Ventilation improvements (trickle vents, extract fans)

  • Benefit: Simple, quick-to-install measures that make homes warmer and more energy-efficient.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

This scheme supports the switch from old fossil fuel heating to low-carbon alternatives.

  • Who it helps: Homeowners and small landlords replacing old oil, gas, or electric boilers.

  • What’s included:

    • Air source heat pumps

    • Ground source heat pumps

    • Biomass boilers (in rural off-gas areas)

  • Benefit: Up to £7,500 towards installation costs, helping reduce long-term heating bills and carbon emissions.
